Starlink is a global satellite system owned by Elon Musk's space company SpaceX. The goal of the project is to provide the population of the planet with high-speed broadband Internet anywhere in the world, especially in hard-to-reach regions. Compared to competitors, Starlink satellites are located 60 times closer to the earth's surface, which allows to reduce the delay in data transmission and provide services that are not available on traditional satellite Internet.
Starlink began testing the satellite system in 2020. The equipment check lasted until October 2021, and in April 2022 there were already 29 countries using Starlink satellite Internet. By September 2022, the number of active Starlink subscribers reached 1 million.
For the full implementation of a large-scale and ambitious project, according to SpaceX representatives, it will take at least $10 billion, but the potential profit is estimated at $30 billion.
